Tailor Graduation Day ~ Malawi Day 6

May 3, 2017 0 comments Article Malawi Ellie

11 Tailors graduate from the Mtunthama Sewing Guild!

We woke to such a pretty day. The air was cool and clear and those fluffy white clouds filled the sky.

One of my favorite parts of life here has been to walk to our sewing center first thing in the morning. We pass through the village saying hi to everyone, then through green fields and finally along a dusty red road. The sounds of the birds are similar to Uganda and the hum of the insects sound so African to me.

Tailor Graduation Day at the Mtunthama Sewing Guild!

Today was Graduation Day for our tailors. It had to be because this was our last day with them. We managed to complete 24 kits. Twelve will go with us tomorrow to give to a dozen girls that we will be teaching our menstrual management class to. They will be a small portion of the 3 schools that are coming together for our program. We will promise kits to the rest of the girls.

The other twelve kits were given to our tailors. Some of these women are surely “retired” but will give their kits to children or relatives. I think they were happy to have one of their own. We took a group picture outside in the last of the day’s sun and bid farewell to these sweet lovely women.

Phoebe and I brought a sewing machine home with us and completed the stitching on some of the fleece that we had promised to add to the tailor’s kits. Alice and Linda, our hosts, asked me to hem their fabric chitenjes [the traditional Malawian skirt] which I was really happy to do. They have been so sweet to us that I was thrilled to return some kindness to them.

Off for a warm bath from a blue plastic basin. Heaven!
